Tiger Den Meeting Plan – Bobcat Badge

When a new Tiger den is formed, the first advancement step is for them to earn their Bobcat badge. This den meeting focuses on the requirements for Bobcat. It also throws in plenty of fun. Since this will be their first Cub Scout meeting, don’t make it all work, work, work.

Also, get off to a good start by helping the adult partners understand that they are active participants. Don’t let them just stand off to the side observing. Engage them in the activities. Sometimes you even have to take the direct approach and say “I think Bobby really needs your help with this activity.”

Tiger Achievement 2 – Where I Live – Go See It

From Scoutermom.com

The Go See It for Tiger Achievement 2 (Where I Live) is always a lot of fun. I haven’t met a first grade boy yet who doesn’t want to see a fire truck or police car up close.

I’ve been on this with all of my kids as Tigers. All my boys did a fire station visit. They got to see the dispatch center and where the firemen slept and ate when on duty. The high point for each visit was the up close look at the fire trucks. They loved seeing all of the gadgets and having each explained to them.

With another's den, we went to the local police station. That was also fun. The police officer who gave the tour was very patient with all of their questions. (“Have you ever shot anyone?”, “Can I hold your gun”, “How many times each day do you draw your gun?”, etc.) She couldn’t take us to the holding cell because they had somebody in there. Otherwise she would have locked them up. They loved seeing her police car. At the very end she turned on all of the lights and sirens for them. They talked about it for days.

So if you haven’t done this requirement with your Tigers yet, schedule a visit right away. Hopefully your local police station or fire station will have somebody on staff who enjoys giving tours to a group of eager young boys.

Tiger Achievement 3 - Go See It

Cookie Sheet Hockey Rink

Requirement 3G (Learn the rules of a game or sport. Then, go watch an amateur or professional game or sporting event.) is a fun one.

Here’s a good one on how to make this Go See It into both a den meeting and an activity. As a den leader, discus with your cubs the rules of hockey. When you think they have a grip on how the game is played, pull our cookie sheet ice rinks to have them try the game.

Here’s how to make the mini ice rink:

  • Cut a piece of 17" x 22" white paper slightly smaller than the inside of an old cookie sheet.
  • Using sharpies, draw a simple layout of a hockey rink on the white paper
  • Cut a piece of clear contact paper to fit the inside of the cookie sheet
  • Lay the white paper in the cookie sheet & cover it with the contact paper. The white paper should be smaller than the contact paper, leaving an edge completely around the cookie sheet for the contact paper to stick to.
  • Fill cookie sheet about half way up the sides with water
  • Carefully place the water filled cookie sheet on a flat shelf in the freezer
  • After the water has turned to ice, take the cookie sheet out & play hockey!
Hockey Stick

Make hockey sticks out of tongue depressors and use a button as a hockey puck. For the Go See It portion of 3G, schedule a night with your den or pack to go to one of the many Cub Scout nights at the Hartford Wolfpack.

Then not only will they see a great game, but they may understand what is happening on the ice!

Tiger Achievement 5F -Let's Go Outdoors Family Activity

From Nature-watch.com

For Tiger Family Activity 5F, join your son outdoors and obeserve the weather. Discuss things about the weather that you know to be true, but you cannot see at the moment, such as is the sun still there although you only see clouds? Is the moon there, even though it is day? Can you see wind? Do you know that the rain will eventually stop? Do you have faith in other things you can't see?

Here's a great way to teach about cloud identification and classification! Have your den purchase along with the other tiger dens their own Nature-Watch Weather Window - a hand-held frame with a variety of cloud types classified by altitude. Kit includes cardboard frames and cloud pictures. Participants will cut out each picture and glue them onto their very own Weather Window! Then, head outside and match real clouds to the photos. Identify the cloud type and discuss what type of weather might follow as a result.
